Pouches and Bags

We've made a range of pouches and bags, historical and modern. At its most basic, a pouch is just a circle of leather gathered up with some kind of tie, be it leather lace, thonging or braid. This is really most suitable for fairly small pouches, using soft leather or suede.
Slightly larger soft pouches can be made of a range of leathers, with several different construction styles. The simplest is to cut a circle of leather for the base, with a rectangle of leather to make a cylinder. More robust leathers can be used for this design, to make even quite small pouches (the multi-coloured pouches shown on the right are 3.5" high by 2" diameter - that's 9cm x 5cm in new money - with
matching leather lace). The larger suede pouches with braid ties (left) are the same design but larger - 3" diameter by 5" deep (8cm x 13cm). The dimensions can be increased to form larger bags. The drawstring holes can be re-inforced with metal eyelets, though usually this isn't necessary.
The following are leather 'turn' pouches - the construction of these is similar to making a pouch out of cloth - it's sewn inside-out and then (after soaking and with some effort and swearing) turned right-side out and shaped. The advantage is in the smooth seams. We've done both historical and modern versions of these.
Viking-style turn pouch with bone toggle. An Anglo-Saxon design... ...and something a bit more modern. This one is unfinished, but the design can be clearly seen.
Paul recently decided to make himself a bag for re-enactment purposes, though it's become so useful he's taken to using it all the time. He claims it's a satchel, though it looks remarkably like a handbag!
